Query for entity with highest rating within a specific category?

I want to create a list of the highest ranked Clubs (or any other entity for that matter) within a single Category, which is the best way of achieving that?
Since I cannot sort a query based on AvgRating (see this thread), I´m stuck getting all entities for a Category and then sorting on AvgRating to get what I want. Seems like a lot of overhead to get hundreds/thousands of items and then sorting them to get the two items with the highest rating.
Any ideas?
