Community Moderation Mode - Flat or Threaded

I am using EPiServer Relate and in Commnunity -> Moderation -> Forums if I select a forum I got the option to have it flat or threaded. Since I have never worked with Relate before (and Community) how can I access this value through code behind and is there a standard implementation (example) to handle this in code? Any help would be more than appreciated.
